A.IG. Bonuses: $50 Million to be Repaid

Here’s some good news for the taxpayers that feel cheated by AIG’s decision to payout $165 million in bonuses. Andrew Cuomo, the New York State attorney general has said that nine ouf of the top ten people who received their bonuses from the American International Group have agreed to return the money.

The attorney general said that he was starting from the top and working his way down the list of the top bonus recipients. So far, the total pledges of people who are returning the money have reached about $50 million.

Furthermore, he said that he does not plan on releasing the names of these people anymore. “I don’t think there’s a public interest in releasing the names,” he said. He went on to say that he hopes to recover about $80 million of the bonuses paid by A.I.G in the United States, however, the remaining amount has been paid to people outside of the USA where his office has no legal standing to pursue them.

One of the ramifications of returning the bonuses however has been some resignations within the company. Christina Pretto, a spokesperson for A.I.G said that they expected more resignations to come, something that A.I.G.’s chief executive, Edward M. Liddy had predicted weeks earlier. Should I Refinance Home?

That takes some of the edge off of my irritation with this scandal. Frankly, this entire issue has been a great waste of energy. Hopefully, we don’t hit another snag like this again. We have bigger problems to take care of.
